‘Galerna 24’: The Green Berets of Alicante Return to the Cantabrian Sea for Military Exercises
In a show of military strength and skill, the ‘boinas verdes’ (Green Berets) of Alicante have once again taken to the waters of the Cantabrian Sea for Exercise ‘Galerna’ 24. From June 3rd to 13th, the Special Operations Command (MOE) operatives trained near the bay of Santander and its surrounding estuaries.
This year’s exercise presented its own set of challenges due to the unpredictable tides and unique hydrographic and meteorological conditions of the area. The operational team of the Support Unit for Combat of the MOE General Staff Group, along with the water specialists from the ‘Tercio del Ampurdán’ IV Special Operations Group, performed a series of demanding tasks in this aquatic environment.
These tasks included tactical navigation, diving, target assaults, reconnaissance of the estuaries, and craft-casting (boat release and recovery from a mother ship). The exercise was concluded with the execution of two tactical scenarios, highly regarded for their complexity and relevance.
The MOE expresses their gratitude for the support and warm welcome shown by the local institutions and citizens in the area. The recognition and connection between the ‘boinas verdes’ and the Cantabrian society were evident, as individuals expressed their curiosity and appreciation for the presence of the military forces.
