Mossos surround Sant Cosme, in El Prat, to restore order after incidents with firearms
An extensive police operation was initiated by the Mossos d’Esquadra in the area of «801 viviendas» in Sant Cosme, a volatile neighborhood in El Prat de Llobregat, near Barcelona. These houses, predominantly public housing, were originally built to accommodate people relocated from shanty towns, but have since become a challenging area for police, who always require significant force to enter the neighborhood and avoid hostility.
The Mossos d’Esquadra deployed officers from the ARRO unit of Metro Sud, as well as activating the police force’s helicopter and drones. Various specialized units, in conjunction with security officers from the Prat’s police station, implemented a lockdown of the neighborhood.
Although the specific mission has not been officially disclosed, unofficial sources have indicated that it is a sweep to conduct searches and potentially apprehend individuals linked to incidents involving the use of firearms in recent months. There have been at least two incidents involving gunshots exchanged between gypsy families in recent weeks, prompting the intervention of the Mossos d’Esquadra.
This area of El Prat, adjacent to the local police and the Mossos d’Esquadra stations, has become a no-go zone, requiring the deployment of significant police forces to prevent further incidents. Consequently, private delivery personnel no longer enter the neighborhood, and postal workers often distribute mail – including court summonses – with police protection.
Back in April 2023, the Mossos were able to dismantle an entire block that was being used for indoor marijuana cultivation. On that occasion, judicial authorization was obtained to access and dismantle it, subsequently filling it with concrete to prevent further occupation and revival of the plantation. This operation had two consequences: the families who controlled the marijuana production handed over part of the drug to prevent further intrusion by the Mossos, which they risked losing their properties; on the other hand, it also triggered a wave of violent actions by a group of young individuals who confronted the police, resulting in incidents and damage to the police station, leading to the reinforcement of external patrol.
