Se forma un jurado de nueve personas para juzgar el crimen del monte Andatza
Nine individuals, including three women and six men, have been selected to serve on the jury for the trial of the three accused in the crime of Monte Andatza. The main defendant, believed to be the author of the murder of a man found decapitated in the area, will be facing trial alongside two women; one charged as an accomplice and the other as an accessory to the crime.
In addition to the nine primary jurors, two men will also serve as substitutes during the upcoming court sessions, which are expected to extend until November 13th.
The selection of the jury members took up the entire first session of the trial, held on Friday at the Gipuzkoa Court.
The trial will resume on Monday with the arguments put forth by the various parties involved, followed by the testimonies of the three defendants.
The main defendant is facing a 15-year prison sentence for the crime, which is believed to have been motivated by jealousy. The former girlfriend of the deceased, who is in a relationship with the alleged murderer, is also implicated and is facing a three-year prison term as an accomplice. The third defendant, accused of covering up the crime, is facing a two-year sentence.
According to the preliminary indictment, the incident began on January 20, 2022, when the victim was released from the Zaballa prison in Álava. The alleged murderer and his ex-girlfriend, who were already in a relationship at the time, went to pick him up. They all then went to the residence of the couple in Hernani, where the third defendant also lived.
The document explains that the deceased began making advances towards his ex-girlfriend in an attempt to reignite their relationship, which was witnessed by the accused on several occasions.
Several days later, on January 24th, the victim allegedly made advances towards the woman on the terrace of the Hernani residence, resulting in a fight between the two men. Despite the woman’s attempts to intervene, she was unable to prevent the aggression.
When the victim became unconscious, the main accused allegedly tied his hands and feet with cable ties, with the woman’s assistance. The document states that she felt «compelled» to do so due to her knowledge of her boyfriend’s character.
They then reportedly transported the unconscious man on a cart to a van, placing him in the back.
Meanwhile, they allegedly ordered the other woman, who was also in the house and afraid, to clean up the blood on the terrace, threatening to implicate her in the events.
During the journey to Usurbil, the victim regained consciousness several times and at one point grabbed the alleged murderer by the neck, prompting him to strike him with pliers.
They eventually arrived at a location in Monte Andatza, where the defendant allegedly dragged the still-living victim to the bottom of a slope, «severing his throat with a box cutter» with the intent to end his life. The victim bled to death.
On February 27th, a hiker discovered the body and alerted the police, who initiated an investigation after confirming signs of violent death. The investigation led to the arrests of the three defendants a month later.
